Wilhite Cemetery

This is an old, public Cemetery located about 7 miles North of MP and about 150 yards East of FM Highway 1402. It has a very good fence around it and is well maintained. It has recently been enlarged and will accommodate a large number of future burials. The name of the cemetery derives from one of the pioneering families of Titus County, that of Church Wilhite who initially donated the land. Several graves are unmarked except for nine native rocks, 1 petrified rock, an unreadable funeral home marker, 1 marker with C. W. inscribed and another granite marker with the initials E. D. C.. It is believed that these markers were once the foot stones of Edward Cox and Church Wilhite that were moved to a random location when their Civil War markers were installed. In addition to the above, there appears to be the graves of two infants marked with cement slabs at the head and foot of the grave. No doubt there are other graves within the cemetery that are unmarked but impossible to tell at this time.

To reach the Wilhite cemetery from the Titus County court house take Jefferson Street (Business US 271) north 1.4 miles to the intersection of Jefferson and Burton (access road of I-30). Turn right (East) onto Burton and continue 0.5 miles to the intersection of Burton and FM 1402 (Harts Bluff Road). Turn left (North) on FM 1402 and proceed 4.3 miles. The cemetery lies on the right (East) about 150 yards across an open pasture. Coordinates: 33o14.401'N 094o56.598'W

At the present time, there is no Guardian for this cemetery. If you are interested, or if you know of any other Confederate Soldier that is buried here and not listed then please Contact Us.
